Zentangle® is a form of relaxed, mindful drawing method where we use structured patterns in a repetitive way to create abstract images; founded by American couple Rick Roberts & Maria Thomas.

As the founders put it, the Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. We call these patterns, tangles. You create tangles with combinations of dots, lines, simple curves, S-curves and orbs. These simple shapes are the “Elemental Strokes” in all Zentangle art. These patterns are drawn on small pieces of paper called “tiles.”

Zentangle art is non-representational and unplanned so you can focus on each stroke and not worry about the result. There is no up or down to Zentangle art. In fact, you can most easily create Zentangle art by rotating your tile as you tangle, always keeping your hand in a relaxed position. You don’t need to know what a tangle is going to look like to draw it. You just need to know the steps. The result is a delightful surprise. As you use the Zentangle Method to create beautiful images, you likely will enjoy increased focus, creativity, self-confidence and an increased sense well-being.”

The Zentangle Method works because it is fun & simple to learn. Almost anyone can use it to create beautiful & abstract ink patterns. Each stroke is easy to draw, there are no mistakes & no preplanned outcomes, yet you always know what to do next. The result is unexpected and beautiful and all this occurs with gratitude and appreciation! If you would like to know more about the method, experience a state of relaxed focus, wake up your imagination & creativity, unlock & discover your skills & abilities, then, do join me at one of my workshops!

I was always inclined towards drawing/sketching. When I quit my full-time IT job, I wanted to start doing something creative as a means of mental relaxation & to put my time to good use. I slowly started drawing again.

The internet provided a huge source of inspiration for creativity. During one of my online search on some creative topic, I chanced upon the term Zentangle® and some images of it. The black ink patterns on a white paper immediately caught my attention and I browsed more about it. I read some blogs on the art-form and finally saw its official website which had beautiful images of abstract patterns created by the founders. I immediately knew that I had to know more about & learn this art. On the website I found a couple (who were the only two Certified Zentangle Teachers, then, in Bengaluru) who were conducting workshops on Zentangle art form. I signed up for a class with them, and thus began my Zentangle journey!

Monochromes always attract me especially charcoal, graphite & black ink. That is one of the first reasons why I loved Zentangle. Also, the very intricate yet delicate patterns spoke to me & stirred something in me hence I took to tangling. The more I tangled, the urge to meet the founders of the method & to take a class from them grew in me! Thus, in the spring of 2017 I travelled to Rhode Island, US to attend a CZT Seminar by the founders! It was an experience in itself!!

I must say it has been a great journey from learning the art form to becoming a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT), myself!
